Case study of myself

I always knew I was missing a pice of the puzzle when for years I was doing all the exercises that were meant to help me but was only getting limited results that didn't stick, I always reverted back to my old pain movement patterns. You would have though that after 25 years teaching Pilates and 7 Years of Sports Therapy I would be as close to perfect posture as possible, every time I seems to get close to pain free status  something would happen and I would be back to square one again. Over the years I have taken courses promising to deliver the magic bullet of pain free movement only to find they were all spouting the same stuff that has been failing us all for years. (even I get caught up in a good marketing hype from time to time)

There is a school of thought that we never get fixed, we just have to maintain the protocol for the rest of our lives, and if it didnt work it was my own fault for not doing it properly or often enough. This never sat well with me, I know how hard I tried and how hard my customers were trying but we all eventually slipped backwards without any real reason for it.

I did lots of reasearch over the years and came across a Biomechanics course that was talking differently to all the other courses, it made perfect sense to me so I joined up and followed the plan for 8 weeks. (You can see the results below). That was when I knew I needed to know more and embarked on a full training course for Biomechanics and it revolutiionised the way I see the Human body and the way it moves.

Over the 8 weeks course I took initially I did 3/4 exercises twice a day. They were not difficult to perform and only took around 15 mins. I noticed a change in my pain after about 2 weeks and by week 4 the low back pain was completely gone with just a little stiffness every now and then. At the time of writing this I am still pain free 3 months later and find that choosing a few of the exercises a few times a week keeps me maintained and pain free.

You can see from the pictures below that I was stuck in a Swayback Posture, knees forward, bum back, head forward and look slouched through the midrift.

The second set of pictures shows I am not in perfect posture (I dont believe there is such a thing) but I am much more aligned, look taller and slimmer now the slouching has reduced.

Before and after pictures of myself

Postural overview

Problems I was having were low back pain that came and went but never completely went away. My low back felt stiff all the time and bending was getting to be a problem. I had had pain in my right foot for 6 months that didn't resppond to any treatments or exercises.

Postural overview

It is clear from the picture that my Left hip is higher than my right and the left shoulder is lower than my right. The big obvious thing here is my left leg look shorter than my right, this is because I am putting all my weight through the right leg further compounding the misalignment in my posture.

Side View

Side ways tells a better story as to why I was having back pain. You can see the knees are forwards pushing my hips backwards then the chest and head are forwards trying to keep me balanced.

8 weeks later The back pain is completely gone and the foot only botheres me first thing in the morning for about 2 mins.

The front view now shows a much more balanced posture, there is a little lean to my left that was not there previously, the shoulder is very slightly dropped but the hips and ankles look more aligned.

Whe I compare this picture to the one above I look like I am standing taller and straigher, my Tail bone is tucked under me, legs are straighter and the head is more balanced.
